About this tour
Undurraga Winery and Algarrobo: Wine, Penguins, and the Pacific
An irresistible combination for those who want to make the most of a day from Santiago: in the morning, the historic Undurraga Winery, one of Chile's oldest and most traditional, with its imposing historic cellars and wine tasting; in the afternoon, Algarrobo, Chile's charming nautical capital, with its Humboldt penguins and fresh seafood.
Undurraga Winery: Pioneer of Chilean Viticulture
Founded in 1885 by Don Francisco Undurraga, this is one of Chile's oldest wineries and among the first to export Chilean wine to the world. Located in Talagante, just 45 km from Santiago, the visit includes a tour through the legendary French park designed by a European landscape architect, the historic oak cellars, and a tasting of selected wines. The Portuguese-speaking guide provides context on Chile's wine history throughout the visit.
Algarrobo: Penguins and the Pacific Waterfront
After the winery visit, the group heads to Algarrobo — known as the nautical capital of Chile — for lunch overlooking the Pacific and to observe the Humboldt penguin colony that lives permanently on a small rocky island in the port. It is a scene of rare charm: wild penguins just meters from the urban waterfront.
Two Unique Destinations in One Day
The combination of wine tourism with coastal wildlife makes this tour unique and surprising. In the morning, wine aromas and oak barrels; in the afternoon, Pacific breeze and penguins. It is the kind of day that travelers remember for years.
With Escapada Tours Chile, a small group (max. 8 people), a Portuguese-speaking guide, and exclusive transfer from Santiago, every detail is crafted for a perfect experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the history of Undurraga Winery?
Undurraga was founded in 1885 by Don Francisco Undurraga Vicuna. It was one of the first wineries in Chile to export wine to international markets, including Europe and the USA. Its park, designed by a French architect, is one of the most beautiful in the region.
Is the wine tasting included in the price?
The guided winery visit with tasting may be included or paid on-site depending on the package. Please confirm at booking. Undurraga offers different tour and tasting options at different prices.
Are the Algarrobo penguins the same as those in Patagonia?
No. The Algarrobo ones are Humboldt penguins, a distinct species from the Magellanic penguins of Patagonia. Both are southern hemisphere species, but Humboldt penguins live in the cold waters of the Humboldt Current in the Pacific.
Can minors participate?
Yes, the full tour is for all ages. The wine tasting at Undurraga is exclusively for those 18 and older. Children can join the winery visit and other stops, but not the tasting.
What is the order of destinations during the day?
We generally visit Undurraga first (in the morning, close to Santiago), then head to Algarrobo for lunch and penguin watching. Return to Santiago is in the late afternoon.
Is lunch included?
No. Lunch is paid individually in Algarrobo, which has excellent seafood restaurants. The guide advises on the best options.
Does this tour operate year-round?
Yes. Undurraga receives visitors year-round (except national holidays). The Algarrobo penguin colony is also present throughout the year.
What should I bring on this tour?
For the winery: comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear (there may be wet grass). For Algarrobo: sunscreen, sunglasses, and a light jacket (coastal breeze). Binoculars are recommended for the penguins.
