The Bird Sanctuary on Chile's Coast

Parque Tricao, located in Santo Domingo about 100 km from Santiago, is one of the most impressive bird sanctuaries in South America. With over 800 birds from approximately 50 different species, the park combines a free-flight aviary — where birds fly freely around visitors — with a high-biodiversity coastal wetland where it is possible to observe wild species in their natural habitat.

The Free-Flight Aviary

The main attraction at Tricao is the aviary, a massive netted structure where hundreds of birds freely explore the space around visitors. Toucans, macaws, cotingas, hummingbirds, herons, and rare species from Chile and Latin America circle within centimeters of visitors, creating a unique close-up experience that no photograph can fully capture.

The park also has specialist bird guides who accompany visitors, identify species, and share fascinating facts about behavior, migration, and conservation. For birdwatchers, it is one of the best destinations in Chile.

The Coastal Wetland

Beyond the aviary, Parque Tricao includes a coastal wetland — a humid zone near the sea where migratory species, water birds, and local wildlife converge. Walking through the wetland with a guide and binoculars reveals a surprisingly diverse ecosystem and is an experience particularly recommended for curious children and adults passionate about nature.
